Overview
Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves are the Gen 10 mainline titles, announced during the February 27 Pokemon Presents on the franchise's 30th anniversary. They're Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives with a 2027 worldwide simultaneous release — no backward compatibility with the original Switch.
The games are set in an open-world tropical archipelago with multiple large islands and accessible underwater areas, a first for the mainline series. The region draws visual and cultural inspiration from Southeast Asia.

The New Starters and Setting
The three starter Pokemon are Browt (Grass-type), Pombon (Fire-type), and Gecqua (Water-type). Browt is a sprout-like creature with bark armor, Pombon is a round, flame-maned primate, and Gecqua is a gecko with aquatic fins. All three have received positive reactions from the community for their designs, with Gecqua trending as the fan favorite in early polls.
The archipelago setting emphasizes wind and water as environmental mechanics — windswept islands with dynamic weather and a vast ocean that players can dive into. Underwater exploration opens up new habitats, Pokemon encounters, and traversal routes between islands.
What This Means for the Series
Making Winds and Waves Switch 2 exclusives is a clear signal that Game Freak is building for hardware that can handle their ambitions. Scarlet and Violet pushed the original Switch past its limits, and the performance issues became a defining criticism. The Switch 2's upgraded specs should give Game Freak the headroom to deliver the open-world vision without the technical compromises.
The game is already topping Famitsu's most-wanted charts in Japan. With Pokopia holding down the casual and creative side of the franchise on Switch 2, Winds and Waves is positioned as the core RPG experience for 2027.
