Darkrai is the hook, but not the whole story
Pitch Black is getting sold as the Mega Darkrai ex set, and I get it. Darkrai is one of those Pokemon that makes collectors wake up immediately. The name alone moves product.
But if we are talking about value for players, I do not want to stop at the box art. The early details point to a set with more than 115 cards, multiple Mega Evolution Pokemon ex, a big Trainer count, and a healthy number of special illustrations. That tells me the real question is not, "Do I like Darkrai?" The question is whether this set gives actual decks new tools.
Pitch Black is scheduled for July 17, 2026, with prerelease events expected earlier in July.
The cards I want to see text on first
Mega Darkrai ex is obviously first. If it has strong damage pressure without being too awkward to set up, Darkness players are going to try it immediately. The Pokemon does not need to be cute. It needs to force bad choices.
Mega Zeraora ex is next on my list because Lightning is always one good attacker away from becoming annoying in the best way. Mega Chandelure ex is the one I am watching for matchup weirdness. Chandelure cards tend to get effects that make people read the card twice, which is exactly the kind of thing that can steal games early in a format.

Trainers will decide whether the set is real
Pokemon headlines sell packs, but Trainer cards usually decide formats. Pitch Black is listed with more than 20 Trainer cards, and that is the number I keep circling. If even two or three of those become staples, the set becomes a lot harder to ignore.
That is why I would not preorder heavy just because the art looks good. I would wait for the Trainer reveals, the first full card text, and the prerelease chatter. Beautiful cards are great. Playable cards are what keep a set relevant after launch weekend.
My early buy plan
If you are a collector, this is probably a set you were already watching. Darkrai, Zeraora, Chandelure, and Excadrill give it a strong character lineup. I would still avoid panic pricing before the full allocation picture is clear.
If you are a player, I would start smaller. One Elite Trainer Box if you like the product, singles after release for anything that tests well, and maybe prerelease if your shop has a good scene. The goal is to be ready, not trapped under a pile of sealed boxes because Darkrai looked cool in a teaser.
