How Mega Stones Work in Pokemon Champions
Mega Stones are special held items that allow specific Pokemon to undergo Mega Evolution during battle. When a Pokemon holding its corresponding Mega Stone is sent into battle and the player activates Mega Evolution during the move selection phase, the Pokemon transforms at the start of the turn before any moves are executed. This timing is important because the transformed Pokemon stat changes, type changes, and new ability take effect before speed calculations determine turn order.
Each player can only trigger one Mega Evolution per battle regardless of how many Pokemon on their team hold Mega Stones. This limitation makes the choice of which Pokemon to Mega Evolve a strategic decision that should be evaluated during team preview. In some team compositions the correct Mega to activate changes depending on the opposing lead and the inferred opposing team archetype.
Mega Evolution is permanent for the duration of the battle once triggered. The Pokemon cannot revert to its base form unless it faints. This means the new ability granted by Mega Evolution remains active throughout the battle, which is why many Mega forms are designed around their unique abilities. Mega Charizard Y gains Drought permanently for the battle; Mega Gardevoir gains Pixilate, boosting all Normal moves to Fairy type with a 1.2x damage multiplier.
Mega Stones cannot be knocked off, stolen, or suppressed by item-removal moves while the Pokemon is in Mega form. Before Mega Evolution, however, the stone can be targeted by Knock Off, which will prevent the Mega Evolution from triggering. This is a common lead interaction in competitive play where an Incineroar or Bisharp user may attempt to Knock Off a predicted Mega Stone holder on the first turn.
Each trainer can only use one Mega Evolution per battle
Offensive Mega Stones
Gardevoirite enables Mega Gardevoir, which gains the Pixilate ability and massive boosts to Special Attack and Speed. Its typing becomes pure Fairy upon Mega Evolution, losing the Psychic typing. Mega Gardevoir is one of the most powerful special attackers in the game and a top-tier pick in the current meta. Gardevoirite is obtained by completing the main story campaign and visiting the post-game Mega Stone merchant in the Arena Tower.
Salamencite creates Mega Salamence, nicknamed the Demon Bird, which gains the Aerilate ability converting Normal moves to Flying type with a damage boost. Its bulk increases substantially while retaining high Attack and excellent coverage. Salamencite drops from the Aerial Championship tournament reward track at Gold tier completion. Mega Salamence demands respect from any team lacking a Fairy type or reliable Rock coverage.
Blazikenite transforms Blaziken into Mega Blaziken with the Speed Boost ability, gaining one speed stage every end of turn. A single turn of Speed Boost followed by a Swords Dance makes Mega Blaziken unstoppable against teams without priority or multiple speed control options. Blazikenite is distributed via event reward during the quarterly Blaziken Cup tournament, though past copies remain tradable through the in-game Exchange.
Tyranitarite evolves Tyranitar into Mega Tyranitar, boosting Attack and Defense dramatically while Sand Stream continues generating a permanent sandstorm. Mega Tyranitar serves as both a weather setter and a physical powerhouse with superb coverage. The stone is purchasable from the Battle Point Shop for 48 BP. Charizardite X converts Charizard to Fire and Dragon typing with the Tough Claws ability boosting contact moves; it is available in the post-game Mega Trial reward chest.
Defensive and Support Mega Stones
Slowbronite creates Mega Slowbro, which gains a tremendous Defense boost and the Shell Armor ability preventing critical hits. Mega Slowbro walls virtually every physical attacker in the game and serves as an excellent Trick Room setter in slow balance teams. The stone is obtained by completing the Water-type Gym challenge in the post-game Extreme Gym circuit. Aggronite is covered in its own dedicated guide due to the specific quest line required.
Audinite unlocks Mega Audino, which gains Fairy typing and the Healer ability with a 30 percent chance of curing a party Pokemon status condition each turn. Mega Audino is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in the format and sees use as a cleric in bulky offense compositions. Audinite is found in the Whispering Woods dungeon after solving the sound puzzle in the Hall of Memory area. It is missable on first visit and requires a second playthrough flag to reenter if skipped.
Lopunnite creates Mega Lopunny, which gains Fighting typing alongside Normal and acquires the Scrappy ability allowing Normal and Fighting moves to hit Ghost types. Its Speed and Attack reach threatening levels making it a deceptively powerful sweeper. Lopunnite is available in the post-game Exchange for 30 Friendship Tokens earned through the Social Battle feature. Kangaskhanite enables Mega Kangaskhan with the Parental Bond ability hitting twice per move; it is sold at the Safari Zone Exchange for 500 Safari Coins.
Sablenite creates Mega Sableye, which gains a massive Defense boost and the Magic Bounce ability reflecting status moves and entry hazards back at the user. Mega Sableye is the premier anti-hazard and anti-status Pokemon in stall and balance team compositions. Its Prankster priority on status moves before Mega Evolution and Magic Bounce after create a complex interaction window exploited by experienced players. Sablenite is earned by winning the Ghost-type Elite Four rematch at difficulty level three.
Event-Only and Version-Exclusive Mega Stones
Several Mega Stones in Pokemon Champions are distributed exclusively through limited-time events and are not obtainable through regular gameplay after the event window closes. Diancite, Mewtwonite X, and Mewtwonite Y fall into this category for most players, having been distributed during the first anniversary celebration and the Legendary Research Season respectively. Players who missed these events can obtain copies through the peer trading system, which is the primary post-event acquisition path.
Delphoxite is another event-exclusive Mega Stone covered in its own dedicated guide due to the complexity of its acquisition. Other notable limited stones include Gengarite, which was distributed during the Halloween Haunted Arena event and returns on an annual basis, and Latiosite and Latiasite, which are earned through completing the Eon Duo legendary encounter questline available only during the Mirage Islands seasonal event.
Version-exclusive Mega Stones exist for Charizardite X and Y, with each version of Pokemon Champions granting one variant as a post-game reward. Players on version one receive Charizardite Y granting Drought while version two players receive Charizardite X for the Dragon type physical attacker set. Cross-version trading makes both available to all players but at the cost of trade negotiation. The Exchange Shop offers both for 64 BP starting at the Gold rank season milestone.
Future Mega Stones listed in the game data but not yet obtainable include Flygonite, Milotite, and Jynxite, which have been data-mined by the community. The developers have confirmed via official communications that new Mega Stones are added with each major season update, suggesting these will arrive through future event tracks. Staying connected to official channels and the community Discord ensures you do not miss event windows when these become available.
Equipping Mega Stones and Battle Tips
Equipping a Mega Stone works the same as any other held item and is covered in detail in the dedicated Equip Mega Stones guide on this site. The key practical point is that a Pokemon holding a Mega Stone cannot hold any other item, so the decision to run a Mega form means forgoing Choice Specs, Life Orb, or other powerful held items. The Mega Evolution power boost must exceed what the best alternative item would provide for the choice to be worthwhile.
In team builder, the game will flag when a second Pokemon on your team also holds a Mega Stone, reminding you that only one can Mega Evolve per battle. Many teams legitimately carry two or even three Mega Stones as a strategy of concealment, making it harder for the opponent to identify which Pokemon is the intended Mega Evolve target during team preview. This deception can force suboptimal lead choices from the opponent.
Some Mega Evolutions are more viable as defensive check options than as sweepers, and the decision of when to activate Mega Evolution on these forms requires different timing than on offensive Megas. With Mega Slowbro, for example, delaying Mega Evolution until the opponent commits their physical attacker can produce more defensive value than Mega Evolving immediately. Practice with each specific Mega form to internalize the optimal activation windows.
Keeping your Mega Stone knowledge current matters because the developers periodically adjust Mega Evolution stat distributions and ability assignments through balance patches. A Mega form that was B-tier last season may be S-tier after a buff, and knowing these changes ahead of your opponents gives you a temporary meta advantage. Follow the official patch notes and community tier list updates after each content patch to stay current.
